Should I take my dog camping? What are the camping essentials to bring for my dog? What should I look out for when camping with my dog? These are commonly asked questions by fur parents. We had the opportunity to chat with Kelly & Khai who are avid campers sharing their adventures on Instagram (@azoutdoorsyduo). Keep reading to get their camping know-how.
Taking Your Dog Camping For the First Time
It can take a few camping trips for your dog to get used to camping. The first night your dog may need extra cuddles at night in the tent, but give it a few times for both of you to find your camping rhythm. For example, Kelly’s dog, Khai, took a few trips to figure out the beauty of camping - trails to sniff, sticks to chew and lakes to swim in.
The best preparation you can do before taking your dog camping for the first time is to:
Set up the tent at home for a trial run. This will let your dog get used to being in a tent. If you’re concerned about the tent floor being scratched, lay an blanket on the floor.
Check ahead of time the terrain and wildlife in the area you are camping. Knowing the area will keep your dog safe from plants and wildlife. For example, in Arizona there is a cactus-like plant called “Jumping Chollas” or in Oregon and California, there are prickly Foxtails to be caution of.
Check the weather beforehand. For example, if it is raining expect your dog’s paws to get muddy. Either you’ll say “I don’t want to deal with muddy paws,” or go camping ready with extra towels. (Note: Lestarya and her dog, Pharrell, use a Mud Buster that makes cleaning dirty paws easier)
Pack extra camping essentials for your dog. Even though, you may want to pack minimally it is worth it to bring your dog’s favorite blanket or toys to increase chances of positive experience. If they don’t use it over multiple trips, then you can cross it off your list of things to bring.

Camping With a Dog Checklist
Here is a recommended list of essentials and can adjust for what works well for your dog
Sleeping
Dog bed/blanket - After a few camping trips, it will become apparent if your dog and you prefer your dog to sleep on top of your sleeping bag or prefer to have their own bed and blanket in the tent
Eating & Drinking
Dog Food & Treats - Bring an extra couple of meals in case you decide to extend your stay or something comes up
2 Bowls for Food and Water
Safety
Collar with identification tag
2 dog leashes - At many campgrounds, dogs are required to be on leash at all times. Bring your usual leash for walking, and a longer leash that will give your dog a little extra footage at the campsite.
Safety lights for night - Many dogs have night vision, but the safety light helps other cars and people to see your dog at night
Dog booties - If you live in especially hot areas, dog shoes are necessary to protect dog paws from the heat
First Aid Kit - Hopefully you won’t need to use, but helpful to have on hand
Printed picture of dog with your contact information - Safety precaution in case your dog gets separated from you
Copy of vaccination certificates - In case a campground requests proof of dog vaccinations
Hygiene
Poop bags
Baby wipes or towel
Miscellaneous
Toys - Optional, but helpful to bring one or two
